When Dawson Vosburg published DOUBLE LIFE this reader spent time with a first novel by a very young writer and came up with the following statements 'The concept of youngsters living in an imaginary world is not a new one, but Vosburg's twist on it makes it a credible reason for reading. Premise making the leap into the imaginary world populated by make-believe (or are they?) friends whose identities alter into an organized faction to fight the evil ones bent on destroying the world is as simple as donning a pair of sunglasses. Vosburg takes this near simplistic idea and makes it work with his use of narration by the lead character who knows the difference between the real and the imagined. It is sort of a 'Secret Garden' updated.'
Now with the sequel TERMINAL VELOCITY the concepts explored in the first novel seem to dilute and play out. This is a difficult novel to stay with the character development lags behind words for words' sake and the momentum of the story lacks the interest of the first novel. Perhaps there will be those who were captured strongly enough with Vosburg's characters in DOUBLE LIFE to wade through this novel, but for this reader it seems like a step backward. Perhaps the better choice in continuing to write would be to put more distance between books and try other story ideas that would encourage the author to explore fresh territory instead of disappointing potential fans with a watered down sequel.
